UPDATE 6/19/05 - Could not remember if I provided a 6 month update so thought I better do it. Clay
has been doing so much better in regards to his behavior issues since we last spoke. He is wonderful
and a really funny boy. He keeps us entertained all day (except when he is completely out and
unarousable on his special bed. His favorite thing is to grab a toy out of his toy box and run as fast as he
can through the house with one of us trying to catch him. He is a real treat.
UPDATE 3/21/05 - Clay is doing very well. He has graduated from family dog 1 and has also had a
couple of in home training sessions to learn how to "leave it" in regards to anything on the counters, trash
and the cat. He is a great dog and big goofy baby who fits right in.
UPDATE 1/23/05 - Well, its been 2 months now and things have improved somewhat. Clay is no
longer urinating in his crate but we had to remove the nice cozy bed from inside it. He still needs to
chase the cat but the cat has now decided to sleep on a chair in the kitchen so Clay cannot get him. He
is also learning to ignore him. We have removed all garbage cans from bathrooms and kitchen, and we
try to remember not to leave anything on the counters in the kitchen. He has trained us well. Obedience
class is not going to well. Clay just wants to play with the other dogs and wants to bark at them when
he is supposed to be learning. He will sit and lie down and sit again when at home, but once he is in the
presence of other dogs he ignores us. It is frustrating. I'm sure he will improve once he is around the
dogs more. Even though he is constantly needing supervision, he is a real cutie.
UPDATE 12/19/04 - I have emailed recently to update you regarding Clay and his many adventures
this past month. In case you did not get the emails I will tell you about our adventures.
Clay has met our 20 year old cat and does chase him at every chance he gets. He also tries to eat his
food and usually manages to eat it even when it is on the counter. He has another nasty habit of eating
cat litter. We have since had to move the cat litter up high so the cat now has to climb for it.
The first week home Clay was playing outside and got poked in the eye with a stick. We took him to
the vet and he did have some abrasions. We inserted eye drops for 2 weeks and it seems better now.
We returned to the vet once again after Clay developped severe diarrhea with blood in his stool. He
spent the night there and of course did not have any diarrhea while there. He was given meds and
brought home. I think the problem was the cat litter.
He is very sweet with all that meet him . We had a sleep over for my daughters Birthday this past
weekend and we really enjoyed all the kids. I think he still thinks he is a little puppy as he is always
trying to sit on our laps.
We started obedience last week-1st class without Clay and the instructors seem to feel that boxers are
one of the harder dogs to train. Is this true? I was always under the impression that they where quick
learners. He has learned what the clicker means this past week and actually listens when I tell him to get
off the couch (we always know where he is when not with us-on the couch sleeping).
The biggest problem we have with him is the crate. He does not like it. He tears up his dog bed when
he is in the crate during the day. We have replaced it 3 times. He also urinates in it every day which I
do not understand because he can hold it all night long when not in the crate. Would it be a better idea
to leave him out of the crate during the day? He is not left more than a few hours because my husband
has been coming home at lunch to let him outside.
The funniest thing Clay does is when he speaks. He can actually say momma. I should video tape it.
Even though Clay has been a real challange and has put a hole in my pocket with all the vet visits, we
have all become very attached to him and he to us. Hopefully the next update will find him adjusting
better to the crate and the cat.
11/21/04 - Clay was adopted!
11/14/04 Clay has been with us for a couple of days now and what a boy he is. Clay absolutely loves
the other dogs. He plays for hours in the fence with Frasier as well, as Emma the Cattle dog and Bessie
the Dobi mix. He is just a boy that wants to have fun. Clay is very good in the crate and never makes a
peep. Maybe because he is so tired from playing. I can't say much about this boy other than he would
love a home with activity, another dog to play with would be a bonus and a cat or two would make him
happy. He is going to make one lucky family very happy.
11/11/04 - Clay has arrived! He is a beautiful 21 month old reddish fawn pure boxer with a black
mask, big floppy ears & a docked tail. He is a big boy, big teddy bear that is! Clay is an owner
surrender as they did not feel they had enough time for him. They felt that it would be best for Clay to
find a new home that could give him all the attention he needs and should have. He lived with cats & it
is said he was best friends with them too & loves playing with other dogs. Clay rides great in the car
and laid right down next to me for the ride home last night. His owners also said he loves to sleep on
the bed and he is crate trained to a wire kennel for when no one is home. This is one great boy who will
not be here long!
