UPDATE 7/15/05 - One year already! Dozer is doing GREAT! He sure is a handful, and
we've had to make some modifications to our house to be sure that he cannot escape, but
we love him. He will be making his debut in the sport of flyball this fall, and we hope to
make it to the Boxer Blast and do a little demo of this cool sport for everyone. After
Dozer is sound in flyball, it's onto agility class for him, he is such an acrobat! We're sending
over some 4th of July pics of our clan all decked out in spiffy collars, hope you enjoy!
UPDATE 1/15/05 - We could cut and paste our last update and put it here. Dozer
continues to do very well. He had a very fun Christmas, after all it was his first "real" one!
I've decided that I need to retire just so that I can get him into all of the sports and things
that he could do. After he learns flyball we'll add on agility, and if I didn't have to work,
we'd look into search and rescue. This dog knows no fear and will climb on or under
anything. We haven't weighed him in a while but he almost looks like he's filling out a bit.
And he is still a total love-bug!
UPDATED 10-16-04 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOZER! He is one year old today, and
doing very well. To celebrate, we brought groumet dog cookies to our flyball team
practice, and pizza for the adults. Dozer got his first taste of flyball last night, and did a few
jumps while running back to get a tug toy from dad. Boy has he got potential! He is a full
pack member now, and I think he is really setteled in. We love him, even when he's
challenging, who could be mad at that face? We'll keep you posted as he starts his flyball
career, and hopefully his therapy career as well!
Updated 09-16-04 - Well, Dozer is an interesting pup. He really seems to have settled in,
and is officially part of the pack. Tomorrow he starts obedience class, and then after that
it's right into Flyball class. This dog loves to jump and climb onto things. If all else fails he
may just have to be an agility dog. He's sleeping in until around 5am if we're lucky, it's like
having an infant around. But we wouldn't trade him for the world. He's a true Boxer clown
and is always making us laugh! Thanks again to everyone who helped to get him to us!
UPDATED – 8/15/04 Dozer (formerly Carlton) is doing quite well. He seems to have
bonded with both us and the other dogs. Aparently he's a fan of chewing on socks, so
we're careful about that. He'll begin obedience class in September, and my trainer is
excited about having him in class. We love him to pieces. He is still very puppyish, and has
endless energy, but he's a total sweetie! We're looking forward to the day that he learns
that weekends are for sleeping in. Right now his internal alarm clock is set for 5am sharp,
everyday. He still has not put on a single pound since he arrived, despite three meals a day
of premium food. But he looks good, and is all muscle. Still trying to convince him that
tennis balls are the best thing on earth so that he may one day play flyball with our other
one. I know have a signature on my e-mail that says "from the land of misfit Boxers",
which is very fitting for our home. All of our rescuse are Boxers in the techincal sense, but
none come close to "comfirmation" standard, and that's the way we like 'em!
7/17/04 - Carlton has been adopted!
7/5/04 Carlton wants everyone to know that he
is ready to go to his new forever home. He is doing just great at his
foster home and has learned so much from his foster brothers and sister.
Carlton is completely housebroken and is really beginning to understand some
hand signals. He will sit, come and we are working on stay down, off, and
stay. He really does pretty well. He is a love and loves getting attention
and playing. He will play at the drop of a hat. He enjoyed his first dip
in the kiddie pool and ended up laying down in the water. He will put his
whole head under water and blow some bubbles. He is so funny. Carlton
loves children and wants to be their best friend. He met my niece over the
weekend and just wanted to be with her the whole time. Carlton is crated
during our work day and is great in the crate. We give him a peanut butter
filled marrow bone and settles very nicely. Carlton loves to run and will
do many many laps in our fenced in area carrying a stuffed animal which he
throws into the air and then will make a game out of finding it. Carlton is
very entertaining and you just have to laugh at him. He is eating two meals
per day and does very well. He now weighs around 50 lbs. Carlton loves
other dogs and is getting better at reading the signs of another dog. He is
busy but really has settled down alot since being here. As with all young
dogs, he needs to be reminded of what is expected of him and will obey once
he realizes that you mean business. He has made lots and lots of progress
and we hope that he will find his new family soon before he gets more
settled in here. He will be a wonderful companion to any family. He needs
time to grow up and dog obedience will do wonders for him. Please consider
adding him to your family. I know he has alot of love to give and is
deserving of a great life with his new family.
6/19/04 Carlton is doing just great at his
foster home. He has learned alot already from all his foster brothers and
sister. He is very sweet and gives lots and lots of kisses but he is an 8
month old boxer boy with lots of energy. There is always someone who will
play with him which he enjoys very much. He is learning when to know when
another dog is tired of playing with him. It's a hard lesson for a deaf dog
to learn as he really has to learn by body language. He has no idea that
his playmate has had enough until they snap at him because he doesn't hear
the first "stay away growl". He has learned in a quick way to back out of a
situation and it is interesting to watch it happen. He can be going at it
at full speed but in the next second he can be found sleeping. There is
really nothing quite like having a boxer puppy in the house. It provides
good entertainment. He is eating good twice daily and is very good crated
in his crate. You have to help him in the crate but once in there he
settles down nicely and doesn't make a sound. He loves to pull the stuffing
out of a stuffed animal. He will play with a ball and he loves to run in
the backyard fenced area. He sleeps all night in our bedroom and has had no
accidents in the house. Puppies are so funny. Last night, he was eating at
his tall feeder and when he first started to eat, he dropped one piece of
kibbled on the floor and it went under the wire feeder stand so he stopped
eating and decided he had to get that one piece of food. Well, he sticks
his head in and had to push to reach the piece of food. He just wasn't
going to give up on it. Finally, he got it and then went back to eating the
rest of his dinner. Too funny to watch. Carlton can provide hours of fun
just by watching him. We are working on Carlton's manners. He doesn't have
any idea yet that he shouldn't just walk on a dog that is in his path. I
hope with letting him know that he has done wrong and the reaction of the
other dog that he will figure this out fairly soon. He might have been able
to get away with this when he was smaller but now that he is a good size, he
has to learn respect for the other dogs in the household. He does love the
other dogs here and has his favorites. I was worried about our other foster
Simon and Carlton but they are the ones that play with each other the most.
Carlton needs a family that will be devoted to him and work with him. He is
just a super puppy and we think he is just a great dog. He sure is a cutie
pie.
6/13/04 Carlton has been returned to our rescue
as the other dog in their household didn't like this little white boy.
Carlton would like to thank the owner, Jennifer and Joanne and her husband
for helping in his transport. Carlton is a very beautiful white boxer boy
who is deaf but already has learned in his short life to let the other dogs
he is with to be his ears. He is a normal 8 month old puppy who loves to
play and run. He loves his fenced in area where he spends alot of time just
having a good time. He hasn't eaten much yet but that is to be expected as
he has had a change in his life again. Carlton gives lots of kisses and
already knows a few commands. He knows sit very well and working on
staying, come, and no. I would say he is very smart and should learn
quickly some easy basic commands. Carlton will need to have another dog in
the household when he is adopted and also a fenced in yard that will keep
him safe but also give him an area to take care of his puppy energy. With a
little patience and a commitment to Carlton that you can provide him with
some love, training and make him a big part of your life, he will be forever
faithful to his family. He will become as great companion.
4/13/04 I would like to introduce our newest guest, Carlton. He is a 6 month old male
boxer who is deaf. Carlton has spent his life this far living in a cage at a pet store.
Needless to say, that makes Carlton a 40 pound puppy with the personality of an eight
week old puppy. At this time we are working on getting Carlton house broken since he
never had anywhere to go potty except in his pet store cage. He has a tummy bug and is
on antibiotics. Carlton is scheduled for his neuter next week, once he finishes his
antibiotics. The ideal forever home would be one with no small children at this time do to
being deaf and being in need of learning gentle manners. He has the characteristics of a
young puppy in a big package. He is still mouthing and is yet unaware of his size and
strength. We will start with some hand commands for the basics. His forever home must
be willing to take on the responsibility of training and caring for a deaf dog. Safety is
always a concern. With love, time and patience Carlton will fit into his forever home. He
is a cuddle bug with so much love to give. We will fill you in as we get to know more.
