11/20/04 - It is with great sadness to let you all know that Baxter went to the Rainbow Bridge on
Wednesday. His quality of life had been diminishing rapidly and his front legs were also starting to fail
him. He still enjoyed his visits with his best friend Sue Redwine who has been there for him during
these past thirteen months with weekly massages and much love. She was there for him at the end. But
he was getting tired very quickly during these past several weeks. He loved his trips to Bath or just to
see her coming in the back gate, just to visit him. He loved going out in his cart and chasing cats,
running up to everyone for a quick hello, and generally impressing everyone with his gently and loving
spirit. There had been several times when I thought the end was near, only to have him rebound with
surprising determination. He loved being a couch potato and sitting next to me while I read. His sibling
cuddled with him at night and his vocalization became his way of telling me he needed to go out, he
needed a drink or most of all it was dinner or cookie time. I want to thank all the folks who did the
original transport on October 10, 2003 and to Joanna, Leann, Kate, and Dot for taking care of him for
extended periods of time while I had to be away from home. He loved to visit and loved coming home
to his siblings. He may have been a foster, but in reality is was home and Baxter and I always knew
that. The Doghouse has an empty spot.
8/5/04 Well, it has been a long time since I was able to get Mom to sit down and type. But here we
are, Summer is really here and we have been going to lots of places where people come over to me
and do a lot of cuddling and petting. Wow, I really love that. My wheelchair seems to be a hit
everywhere I go, and I am really getting the hang of it. I can now back up pretty well, and do much
better on the corners. You guys driving cars would appreciate my technique. All the Boxers,
Annabelle, Magoo, Kelli and I, went to the SCBR Petfest and eventhough it rained a lot, we walked
around with lots of people helping to handle my pack. We hung out in the barnyard stalls and stayed
nice and comfy most of the time. We have been to a couple of BRADs and Annabelle and I went to a
wonderful Native American Pow Wow at the Riverbend Campground in Leeds, ME. Mom also
takes us to the Farmer's market in town. Last weekend I spent some time with another SCBR family,
Dot and Fred (humans), Abby, Clara (SCBR) and Sam (SCBR), (the boxers.) As always, I was a
good boy, if somewhat heavy to lift, but we went for a nice walk and I got lots of hugs. I get to see
my friend Sue every week for my massages. Sometimes Sue drives to our house and sometimes Mom
drives me to her office in Bath. I check the car every day, just to make sure that it doesn't leave
without me. Request Please: If anyone has any of those washable waterproof mattress pads around
they are not using, Mom says she would really appreciate having them. Magoo also uses them at night
because of his Cushing's and Diabetes Insipidus, they are easy to wash and it helps keeping things
clean. We use a number of them each day, and having a small supply helps a lot, thanks. Anyway, I
am still looking for my forever home, as I am a bit heavy for Mom to carry out and back into the house
when I have to go potty. I am a happy dog and spoiled boxer and like it that way. I am the perfect
lap boxer. Love Baxter.
4/29/04 Hello again from Maine and from Baxter the wonder dog. A wonderful Lady in Florida sent
me a wheelchair which I have named "my ladybug". I am learning how to get around in it and every
day is better and every day I can go for a longer and longer walk. I have learned to steer around
potholes, to back up a little to get out of tight spots, and to run up to people hoping that they will pet
me. I am even starting to ask to go out several times a day specifically to go for a walk/ride in my
wheelchair. My best fried Sue (who gives me a massage every week) says that my shoulder muscles
are really building up. Mom no longer has to guide me with a leash as I just follow my sibling canines,
Annabelle, Magoo and Kelli. I really want to express my appreciation for the wonderful gift for being
able to get around on my own. Keep me in your hearts and prayers. Love Baxter.
1/26/04 Hi everyone, Baxter here again. It has been awfully cold here in Maine, and I have just not
wanted to go for any walks (?) in the meadow. The snow is frozen and is cold and sharp and really
hurts my feet. I also notice that my siblings don't really like being out in the weather either. They get
really excited until Mom opens the gate and they feel the wind in their faces. They all turn really fast
and run for the dog door. Too bad I can't negotiate the dog door, but the sill is too high and I cannot
pull myself through it. Mom says it doesn't matter and she picks up my rear end and together we get
wherever we are going. Kinda like a wheelbarrow. I have really strong front legs. I am still getting
great massages from my best friend Sue and get very excited whenever I know that I will be seeing
her. I like it best in the evening when I can lay next to Mom and assorted canines in the big chair. Too
bad that she has to leave every day, because I would really like sitting next to someone all day long. I
just love to be petted and petted. (It's too bad there are five other dogs who want to be petted). But I
can't complain, spring will be here one of these days and then I can go out into the grass again. I get
around pretty good out there. Love Baxter
12/8/03 It's been almost two months since coming to Maine and I am really doing very well. Regular
"walks" in the fields and now snow and in between lots of laying around time on my pillows. I really
love going for walks and even get to paying tag a little with the resident lady canines, Annabelle and
Kelli. I like to investigate everything around and when Mom calls me I come running. She has found
that I can actually stay on all fours for 50 yards or so before losing my balance. But I get up right
away and keep going.
I went to Joanna's for a short visit during Turkey week because Mom had to visit family and I cannot
use the dogdoor. (The sill is too high). I was a very good guest and I always let people know when I
have to go out, AND when I want to come back inside out of the cold. I spent some time in the crate
because it seemed best to stay out of the traffic of the resident canines there. Not everyone
understands that I cannot move out of the way quickly. At home Magoo cannot see and I cannot
move to quickly and the ladies have gotten used to both of us and give us some space to maneuver.
Mom is giving me supplements (MSM and glucosamine and Vit C) yuk, but we have to do what we
have to do. And, much much better than that, I am getting massages from Sue (another SCBR Mom
to Ivy and Moon) once a week and that really feels great. Of course, I love the attention, but it does
make me feel good to have all the right spots massaged. I am now a spoiled SCBR Boxer and hope
to keep it that way. Please keep me in your hearts. Love Baxter
10/22/03 Hi everyone, Baxter here. I arrived last week after a long car ride from New York and
want to thank everyone for taking such good care of me. I am rather a special case as I have difficulty
walking and often need a lift to get into and out of cars, couches, etc., and probably would have
problems with stairs or steps. My rear legs don't always do what I ask and I fall down a lot,
especially on smooth floor, but I can really get going on the grass. The Vet told Mom that it probably
is a neurological problem and not an orthopeadic one, and would take a specialist to made that
diagnosis. I don't think I care to much about that anyway as I really like my dog pillows and nightly
spot on the couch. We go for a walk twice a day in the meadow and today I even played and "RAN"
with Annabelle and Kelli. They were playing and they let me join them. Magoo was standing back
wondering what all the commotion was about. Mom says I am a real lap dog and she is right, I love to
be petted and loved spend my time just hanging around. Mom says that the short walks are doing me
a lot of good and that I seem to be able to get around better (outside in the grass) each day. She is
giving me some supplements (which I don't like the taste of), and we will see if anything works. Keep
me in your hearts. Lots of Love to all Baxter
