UPDATE 8/22/06 - Pollo (Apollo), who was with us for just 19 months, passed away at home
around 1:30 AM, Thursday, July 27th.  We had just been to the vet the morning before, and Pollo
was scheduled for surgery Friday morning -- the doctor was going to decide whether to operate on a
tumor on his right side above where one had been removed just before we adopted him, or to work
on trimming his gums which had grown back over his teeth.  The tumor had appeared suddenly about
3 weeks earlier.  We'd had it tested and blood work done, but they were not picking up any cancer.
On that Tuesday, the doctor said it might be a mast tumor.  This after asperating (sp.?) it 4 times in
different spots and being unable to get any clear reading.
Pollo had seemed fine that Wednesday morning -- went outside, did 180 degree jumps, made his
water and grinned at me, ate breakfast.  He'd seemed to be sleeping even more than usual, though,
over the last few weeks.  At lunch, he usually sat next to me & I gave hime some biscuits while I ate,
but that day -- for the first time ever -- he refused biscuits.  He was loggy all day and seemed to be
getting weaker.  He didn't eat his supper, which was a first for him -- he had a great appetite!  He
threw up during the evening -- our other boxer had a very touchy stomach, so we thought this might
be temporary and be better the next morning.  I slept on the couch downstairs to be with him.  He
seemed quite weak by the last time we went outside before bed.  He couldn't seem to get
comfortable.  Around 1 AM, I called the vet and told her what I was seeing and asked about bringing
him in.  He fell and couldn't get up again, so I laid him on his side and woke my husband and called
the vet to say we were coming in.  Pollo raised his head to look at me as I came back to him and then
he dropped it and died.  We took him in to the vet anyway, hoping that we weren't seeing what we
knew.  He was pronounced dead and we made arrangements for creamation.
We miss him very much.  He was a really sweet dog.
The doctor called me and after I'd told her what happened; she thought it was his heart that gave out
and not directly tumor-related.  She said she believed we'd done everything we could, but that he had
a lot of health issues and it was his time to pass on.
I have always thought that boxers form very strong relationships with their original owner/family and
think this was true for Pollo.  Although after about a year, I think he knew he had a home and we all
loved him, he would still seem at times to be looking for someone.  Some nights he would wake up in
the middle of the night and be anxious and want to go downstairs and outside.  I'd get up and let him
out, and he'd go to the head of the driveway and look out at the street that led away.  After peering
for a while and looking  around the yard, he'd make some water, come back in, and come back
upstairs to bed.
Boxers really need "forever" homes, but we're all very glad Pollo was part of our family for as long as
he could stay.

UPDATE 3/28/05 - Apollo is doing just fine. He has put on a few pounds and healed up nicely from
his surgery to remove a few growths. He is very gentle and very polite... somebody trained him not to
jump on people and it is very much appreciated with oldsters around the house.

When he first arrived, we noticed that he did not play very much and this weekend was the first time
we have seen a Boxer romp in this boy.   He loves to get his balloon after trips to the grocery store
and attacks them with vigor until they pop.

We need to adjust his clock though. He has a disconcerting habit of wanting to be up and about at
5:30 AM.  (groan). But he eats well, takes his medicine like a champ... has no obvious Boxer tummy
troubles. No accidents in the house... walks on a leash without dragging his walker... in short, a real
gem.  He does not like fire and when we build a fire in the fireplace, he leaves the room and lies down
in another room where he can watch us. Not a cuddler (yet) but he is starting to warm up to us.  He
is a fine boy and we love him.

UPDATE 3/1/05 - We tried to submit a report a while ago, but for some reason it did not get into the
system. Appollo is a real gem. He is very gentle and sweet and seems to have none of the tummy
problems that Boxers are prone to.

He sleeps at the foot of our bed and we have not had any accidents whatsoever in the house. We
give him free roam of the house as he is completely trustworthy. He is very gentle with children and
does not jump on guests.

He has some arthritis problems, but the medicines seem to be able to help him through the worst of it.
He has healed successfully from his gum surgery and his skin surgery as well. we had biopsy done on
some other small growths and they all came back benign.  We have a little infection in one of his toes
which is not unusual in Boxers, but he takes his pills and allows us to soak his foot without complaint.
The vet said he is in good shape but shows a lack of exercise which we are trying to remedy.

Appollo does not seem to know how to play. Our prior pet was the class clown and would play at
the drop of a hat. But Appollo is soooo serious and it is going to be a while before we are able to
connect with him emotionally. After he eats his chow, for instance, he will go lie down in another
room where he can watch the family from afar, and we have to coax him to join us in the family room.
We believe that this will take a long time to overcome, but with enough TLC we hope he can relax
and meld with us.

I took him to the airport to pick up our daughter who was coming in for a brief vacation. We
wandered all over the airport and he was a real champ. All the people oooed and aaahhhhed over
him and scratched his ears with no problem whatsoever. Eventually one of the iron maidens in
security told us to leave the terminal before the cops busted us. So on the way out we ran into 4 cops
who all took turns petting him and scratching his ears and telling him what a good dog he was.  They
could not have cared less that a dog had entered the terminal.  (it was sort of amusing). Anyway, it
was an exercise in getting the boxer out of the closet and into general population. Boxer Power!!!
LOL.

We love the little guy and hope we can make up for what has gone before.

12/04 - Apollo has been adopted!

12/26/04 - Apollo would like to wish everyone a very happy holiday season.  He had a great
Christmas at his foster home and continues to be just a great sweet boxer.  He has been brought up
to date on all his vaccinations and also had his dentistry done last week.  They actually did alot of
surgery on his gums to uncover many of his teeth that were covered by gum material.  He must have
been in a great amount of pain
when he ate but now all his teeth are showing and he is back enjoying life here at the Boxer'In.  He
also had a couple of lumps taken off of his right rear leg that were mast cell tumors. The vet felt that
she got nice clean margins so he should be all good to go.  Whoever adopts Apollo will just have to
keep an eye on this area to watch for recurrent lumps.  He had quite a week last week and all that he
went through, he continued to be just a sweetheart.  His favorite spot is on a dog bed in front of the
fireplace and most of the time he shares his spot with his foster sister Peaches.  She is very young and
he is very very good with her.  He has alot of patience with her. Apollo loves to eat and is always
right in the kitchen waiting for his
meals.  He likes to go outside and will stay out longer than I want him to. He just does alot of
exploring in his fenced in area.  Apollo will get frisky with his foster dad and they do alot of playing
back and forth.  He
will take whatever attention that you can give him.  He is just a very nice guy and a greater companion
you will not find.  He loves to go in the car and is very well behaved.  He greets guests at his foster
home with lots of  wiggles and does not jump up on people and that is a real plus for a boxer.I wish
his foster brothers and sisters would take a lesson from him.  Apollo loves treats and expects one
when he comes in from outside.  Apollo's wish for the holidays is that he will get a family and home to
call his own.  He is so deserving of his second chance at a new life.  He just doesn't have any real
issues that I can find.  He isn't crated anymore here and is always perfect.  Please take a look at him
and think about making him yours, he
certainly will not disappoint you.

11/30/04 The Boxer'In on the lake would like to welcome our newest guest, Apollo.Apollo was
turned into rescue from a shelter after being turned into the shelter from his owners who were moving.
Apollo would like to thank the great staff at the shelter who worked hard to get him to  foster care.
Apollo also had some great transporters yesterday getting him to us who included Christi, Ralph, Bev
and Kristen.  Thank you for helping this great guy.  Apollo is a 5-6 year old neutered fawn male with
docked ears, cropped tail and four white paws.  He is actually quite small for a male boxer. He has
lived with children, a cat and has met all his foster brothers and sisters here at the Boxer'In with
nothing but lots of happy wiggles. Apollo will be making a trip to the vet to be brought up to date on
his vaccinations and to have his teeth checked.  He will need to get a dental cleaning and some work
done on his gums and then he will be ready for his new family.  Apollo has come into our home and
just settled in so nicely. He hasn't missed a meal and knows when treats are given out which he
enjoys. He will need to learn that he is not the only boxer here and that he has to wait his turn. Today,
he ate a great breakfast and is now taking a nice nap on a dog bed.  He needs to catch up on his
sleep as you just don't get any sleep at the shelter. It is just too busy there.  Apollo is sweet, gentle
and loving and we already know that he will be a great addition to any home. Last night he slept on a
dog bed in front of the fireplace which must have felt wonderful to him.  He is a little lame when he
first gets up and hopefully he will get over that as he gets moving around here and enjoys all that we
have to offer him.  Apollo knows some basic obedience like sit, stay and go lay down.  We will keep
you updated as we get to know this calm boxer boy.  He is just a sweetheart.
