UPDATE 3/28/05 - Great news!!!
Angel's tumor was non-cancerous!!!!  We are sooooo relieved.  Also got
results back from her inhalent allery test, she is highly allergic to
household pathogens, grasses, molds, funguses, cats, and get
this.....humans!!!!  Poor thing.  Since she is having such a bad time
with the itching, we've decided to go with the desensitization protocol.
Hopefully it will give her some relief.

Angel is getting real antsy for the snow to melt....she really hates the
cold weather.  (Me too!)

On another note, she has been doing great with the housebreaking.  Her
accident rate has greatly reduced.

Angel somehow pulled her tags off her coller while outside.  We
recovered all except the SCB tag with her ID #.  DO we get a replacement
from you, or can we have one made ourselves??

UPDATE 2/23/05 - Just a quick update....
Angel went in for minor surgery yesterday to remove a tumor on her front
leg.  We are awaitng the results from the biopsy.  Hopefully it is
nothing to worry about.  We also has bloodwork done to try & figure out
what she is allegic to.  The poor thing is loosing hair from all her
scratching.  (Mange has been ruled out, thankfully)
All things considered, she is doing well.  Hates the ecollar, but she
hasn't tried to destroy it yet.  We'll keep you updated.

UPDATE 1/19/05 - We are happy to report that Angel is
fitting in very well with our family and daily routines.  She LOVES
taking our daughter to school and lets me know when it is time to get in
the car.  SHe has been wonderful with my kids and they love her vary
much.  I still need to supervise since they are only 2 and 4 years old.
The 2 year old can get a bit rough with her and I wouldn't want any
unfortunate accidents to occur.  Although Angel is incredibly tolerant.

SHe is not quite so tolerant of her crate however.  I think it may be
seperation anxiety.  I literally have to pick her up and put her in the
crate.  It was suggested that I try a metal crate rather than the
plastic airline approved version.  Her new crate is on the way, so I
hope it helps her a bit.

I would consider not crating her if she wasn't still having accidents in
front of our back door.  This is perhaps the most difficult part of her
to deal with.  Any suggestions? She lets me know she needs to go out by
standing at the door and then coming to me.  SHe doesn't bark or whine,
she just stands there in front of you.  (which she does for other
reasons as well).  We really need to remedy this situation, our hardwood
floor is starting to warp!!!  I know she feels bad b/c I don't even say
or do anything and ANgel looks apologetic.  We're just not picking up
her cues very well.  I try to make sure she goes out regularly, but with
the extremely cold weather, she is resistant to the suggestion!

Lets see, healthwise, Angel is doing well.  We are working with her
veterinarian to solve her itchy skin/liking paws problem.  We've started
with putting her on a hypoallergeninc food without any other
treats/supplements.  SO far it may be working.  I also think just the
cold winter air is part of the problem.  I know I get dry itchy skin
when the weather gets this cold.

We have finished obedience training a few months ago.  She did quite
well.  I haven't really been working with her lately since she loved
working for treats and right now she can't have any.  Any other rewards
you can suggest we use?? We were hoping to continue working with the
trainer form her obedience class, but now with the food restrictions,
that doesn't look likely.

Angel has been a great alert dog.  Hse lets me know when someone is at
the door, walking down the street, and when my husband comes home.
SHe's so good at it that she even barks at our reflections in the
windows.  She thinks out reflections are particularly menacing and it's
hilarious to see her barking at them.  I don't know what about them
bothers her, but her bark is definitely different than when she sees
someone at the door.

At the moment Angel is curled up on the couch trying to keep warm  (our
house is freezing!)  She is such an adorable Boxer and I love cuddling
with her on the couch after I get the kids to bed.  It's such a great
way to unwind and relax.  I can't imagine how we managed before she
joined our family!

Thank you again for placing her in our family.  We are blessed to have
her!

UPDATE 11/3/04 - This is my second attempt at doing
an update on Angel.  There is so much to tell about her first month with
us.  Overall, having her with us has been wonderful.  She fits right
into our family.  She is very loving & cuddly and hates it when we leave
her behind.  She isn't too thrilled with her crate, but it's necessary
since she tends to find SOMETHING to get into that she shouldn't.  She
loves to ride with us in the car to take my 4 year old to school.  There
are a few behavioral issues we are working on, but she shows promise.

My first concern was how she was going to interact with my kids & vice
versa.  So far, so good.  My son (2 years old) has been the biggest
challenge.  He just wants to love her all the time (which in his eyes
means laying on top of her, and hugging her tightly around her neck)
Angel has been very tolerant of this invasion on her space.  My son is
starting to let up a bit after numerous timeouts to his room.  I am
thankful that Angel has been so tolerant, but I think it would send the
wrong message if I let my son continue to do this, especially since
Angel is so new to us.  There have been a few occasions where she got
mouthy with myself (when I wasn't giving her attention) and with my son
(when he didn't like her "verbalizing" at me and he decided that hitting
her on the head would take care of it)  I've been controlling this by
not allowing my son to get away with such behavior and also discussing
the issue with the obedience trainer we have been working with.  Angel
has almost completely stopped her mouthing and my son is almost on the
same page.  Of course I am always supervising them together, which isn't
as simple as you might think.  Try uprooting either a sleeping dog, or a
toddler who is totally engrossed in an activity just so you can  go use
the bathroom (without fear of the 2 having an altercation).  But that is
a necessary fact at this point.

Lets see, so far Angel has been questionable with other dogs.  She
charged my neighbor's female yellow lab & the two had quite the fight.
Our trainer mentioned that most of it was probably just noise, but it
was pretty scary.  Angel seemed to be the instigator, but I am reluctant
to say that she was totally at fault or that she is not good with other
dogs.  I don't think the humans set the situation up properly.  We're
hoping for a more controlled and friendly meeting at some point in the
future.  Angel seems ok, but perhaps a bit apprehensive with the other
dogs in her obedience class.  Again, the situation is not that desirable
for friendly dog interaction.  Lots of stress and excitement going on at
the time.

About a week after we adopted Angel, we took her on her first family
trip.  We went camping at the American Legion & Peoples State Forest in
Barkhamsted, CT.  It was just for the weekend, and Angel did great.  We
camped with some friends with kids, and she did great with about 6 kids
all about. The noises in the woods didn't bother her to the point of
barking, but she let us know if something didn't seem right.  It was a
great comfort having her with us.

We have already taken her to meet our Veterinarian, and it was
recommended that we temporarily change her diet since she was continuing
to have runny stools.  She has gotten much better, but the food really
isn't that nutritious in my opinion since the first ingredient is a
grain.  I am looking into a raw food diet, does anyone know much about
it?  She has also been on medication for a yeast infection in her ears,
and is getting better.  All in all, she is pretty healthy.

Obedience training has been going well.  She is showing lots of
improvement and we are getting suggestions on how to handle her dominant
behavior.  The mouthing has been the biggest issue, and that has gotten
much better.  She craves praise, so she has been pretty easy to train
unless she has decided to test my authority.  Obedience class has been a
great tool for me, just in helping me to assert my authority and telling
her where her place is.

OK.  On to the fun stories.......
On the first day we had her, she decided to get in on the fun with my
kids.  They were blowing bubbles outside, and she decided that it would
be fun to catch them.  It was so cute to see her pop them and wonder
where they went!!!

One of my fears has come true with Angel....she's a jumper.  She watched
a squirrel climb over our 4 foot fence and decided to go after it.  It
took her 3 times, but she finally jumped our fence.  I was powerless to
stop her at that point.  I was just too slow.  (Plus I didn't really
think she would do it!)  We got her back pretty easily.  Later that day
I was babysitting for a friend and took the 3 kids & Angel for a walk.
Two kids were in a stoller & my son was in a backpack carrier.  After
the walk, I let them loose to play in the yard and forgetting what had
happened just a few hours earlier, I let angel off her leash in the
backyard.  She looked at me, looked at the fence, and jumped it in one
try.  This time, she didn't want to come back & took off into the woods.
With my 2 year old on my back & the other 2 kids trailing behind, I ran
down the street to see where Angel had ended up.  Just then my neighbor
came home & Angel jumped into her SUV.  I had my husband replace the
fence with a 6 footer that very weekend.

I'm sure I have forgotten something, so there will be plenty to report
on next month!

10/3/04 - Angel has been adopted!

9/22/04 Well, it has been an exciting couple of days for Angel and RoseMarie in their new
foster home.  My first objective was to get a couple of extra pounds on these lean little girls,
so I switched them from eating once a day to having 3 smaller meals with some little extras
in them and they have ravenous appetites and love yogurt!  The second order of the day
was to teach them to stay out of the kitchen and they are very quick learners!  After a few
rounds of verbal commands and pointing for them to get out of the kitchen, all I would have
to do is point and they would back right up!  After leaving the kitchen unattended for a few
minutes though, I returned and started searching for some fresh garlic I had just
peeled...thinking I had lost my mind, I had the idea to smell their breath and discovered that
Angel was the culprit in the countersurfing episode!  Hard to hide garlic. The girls love to
play together and can get a little rough chasing each other around, but they are a hoot to
watch.  They love to ride in the car and are good passengers.  Everywhere I walk this pair,
people stop to say how cute they are and they love all the attention.

9/20/04 RoseMarie and Angel have been returned to rescue due to some major life changes
for their adoptive family. More to come soon on this mother-daughter pair!

04/22/04- Angel is an angel....she is sweet and smart and comical and prances around here
like she owns the place....She will be a great dog for just about anyone that can withstand
her puppy foolishness...she appears to be fine with cats...she adores my three year old son,
she gets along fine with all the other dogs here...she has been good in the crate (after the
initial night, when she grumbled and whined a bit). A bit of jumping up, not unusual for a one
year old boxer baby. She goes outside to do her business like a little lady. And to top it off
she is absolutely beautiful!  She's ready to go to a great forever home...Will it be yours?

04/19/04- Angel has arrived at her foster home and trust me... her halo is on straight...she is
a sweetie pie. Angel is a tiny brindle girl with a white chest and some white on her muzzle.
She is about one year old.She weighs 44 lbs. She came to us from a shelter in
Massachusetts. Angel came into rescue with her mother and grandmother. More as we get
to know her better.

4/18/04 - Angel arrived tonight along with RoseMarie & Harley thanks to Lori & a very
nice lady
from the shelter, who contacted us to help this trio.  This is a very sad one-their owner died
of smoke inhalation in a house fire & it was 10 days before anyone knew.  The dogs
miraculously survived.   We think Harley is the mother of RoseMarie & Angel is
RoseMarie's baby.
