UPDATE 2/9/05 - It's been awhile since I updated Abby, but she is doing splendidly. She is
such a big love. She can't bear to sit by your side, if she doesn't somehow get you to place your
hands on her in one form or other. My favorite way of watching TV with her is to have her lay
next to me, her head in my lap, while I just caress, her soft, floppy ears (we can sit this way for
hours). Abby's learned a few lessons over the past few months: she's learned to speak when
spoken to (or rather, when you show her FOOD), she's learned that if she snuggles with Luigi
(one of our cats), he'll roll over and give her his tummy, which she then mushes her face into
(very cute to watch), she's learned that if she tries to sneak food away from Buttons (another
one of our cats), HE WILL SCRATCH, and she's learned that if mommy and daddy sit on the
couch together, she can always manage to wedge herself between mommy and daddy until she
knocks mommy off! She's also learned that if she cries like Chew-bacca (think Star Wars) and
jumps out and down, her daddy will always take her for a walk, even if her last one was recent.
We just adore Abby, and we are waiting for our first child, so I and very excited to see our
new baby with Abby.
UPDATED 10-18-04 - Well, I can't believe it's been two months since we adopted Abby, our
girl has really made herself at home (we like to refer to her as Diva Dog). The leash issue we
were having with her has been resolved, we simply purchased a harness (fleece lined of course
- so she doesn't chafe), and for some reason, she no longer pulls. Abby has decided that her
dog bed is just not good enough, she insists on sleeping with us, which we don't mind of course,
but she passes out smack in the middle of the bed and suddenly her 70lb frame feels more like
150 lbs, cause there's no moving her! I think we need a King size bed! Abby has also decided
that the vacuum and the blowdryer are monsters that need to be destroyed! Watching her go
after the vacuum is hysterical, but can make cleaning quite difficult. Her favorite toy just so
happens to be our youngest cat's favorite too, so it becomes quite a production when they both
want it, but they seem to have worked that out themselves, when Abby wants it, Abby gets it,
case closed! I could go on and on. Our girl is like having a small child around, curious, playful,
a little trying at times, but always full of love!
UPDATED – 09/01/04 Well, Abby has been with us one month now, and we can't
remember life without her. She is sweet, affectionate, gives sloppy, wet kisses and loves almost
everybody she meets. My six year old nephew is a particular favorite with her, he'll lie on the
ground and roll around with her, all the while getting licked in the face. It's great to watch!
We've found that she's pretty intelligent too! When it's walk time, all we have to say is "Abby,
get the leash", and she runs to her "toy box", gets her leash and brings it right to us. She's a
smart girl, or maybe we're just proud parents. She hasn't shown any signs of anxiety, and has
adapted to living with us quite well. My only challenge with her seems to be walking on a leash,
she has a tendency to pull (A LOT), and considering that I don't weigh that much more than she
does, can be quite a challenge. She looks for stray cats, birds and kamikaze squirrels, and
offers you no warning before she takes off after them! We'll be working on that in obedience
class soon. Although she tries to chase stray cats, she has learned to live with our four cats. She
tries to kiss them, eats out of the same bowl as our youngest sometimes and has even shared a
nap or two with them, she just loves her feline brothers, so I'm not sure why she changes once
she gets outdoors. We learned that she likes to swim when we took her hiking at Ramapo
Reservation, she just ran into the river, and jumped over all of the little rapids. It was quite
comical. As you can see, we love our Abby and our looking forward to many, many years with
our dear girl!
7/31/04 - Abby has been adopted!
7-26-04 - Abby is a white female with a docked tail and natural ears. She arrived at the
Lodge on Saturday. She was very nervous, so she spent the night in her crate and she was a
very good girl. Sunday morning I brought her into the yard, she was a little nervous but she
soon got very comfortable. She then met Rocky and they did great together. Then after a little
while I let her met the Queen brat, things didn't go to well, but then again Katie is that way with
all fosters, most especially females. Katie just has to let all fosters know she is the queen. In a
few days they should be fine. Katie has been in the crate most of the time, and we have let
Abby have the run with Rocky. She is the sweetest thing. She spent the day in the yard with
all the kids, she never left the deck, except when I would leave. My buddy (Short Man) was
here today, he is 4 and he just loved her. She was just wonderful with him. She never jumped
on him, she let him walk her on the leash. Abby ate her first meal today. She take treats very
gently. She listens well, and she knows some commands. Yesterday after her and Rocky first
met, she went to jump on him and I yelled. She topped ASAP. She is a terrific lady and will
do well in a home with young children. She will not be here long, so get your application in.
10/18/03 - UPDATED - Tell us how your new Boxer is doing=Abby has been adjusting very
well to being the newest Greenspan family member. At first she had a few accidents in the
house but now that she is a bit more settled in, she hasn't had any accidents. She is learning the
boundaries of our property through daily training between Scott and I. She has been eating and
sleeping well. All in all, she seems to be happy to have a little girl and a brother boxer to play
with all day long!
10/8/03 UPDATED - Abby is doing great. She and her new brother Kaiser have gotten
completely comfortable with each other and play and chase each other around the backyard
every chance they get. Abby is also getting along with our daughter Eva. Even thought Eva is
just learning to walk, Abby will run up to her and start licking her face until Eva is giggling like
crazy. It's obvious that Abby had had some obedience training, but we are looking forward to
our class next week to polish her up. Our new favorite game with Abby is watering the new
landscaping. She'll leap into the air to try to get a drink of water coming out of the hose. That's
it for now.
9/7/03 Abby has been adopted!
8/19/03 Abby has settled in beautifully here at the Riverview! She has met the two resident
canines, and will romp with Tika in the back yard. Today we will introduce her to Wilson.
When she arived she instantly bonded with my 18 year old son and his father. They are thrilled
because she is acting like she prefers them to me. I guess she is still upset that I am the person
who took her away from her previous home. Not that she has been mean to me, but she does
definitely prefer the men!
8/17/03 Abby has arrived, fresh from Crazy Acres. She uis now settled in very calmly with the
boys in the tv porch. She checked out all the smells in the back yard, got scared by some
hanging laundry, and I got about a hundred mosquito bites waiting for her to be comfortable
enough to come back to me so we could come into the house together. She did not care for
any supper tonight, but will probably enjoy her breakfast.
Abby is a 1 1/2 yr old owner surrender. Abby is a white girl with natural ears and a docked
tail. She was surrendered due to a divorce. Abby has lived with other dogs both large and
small. Abby is said to be good with cats and great with kids. Abby is a little on the chunky side
but obviously well loved and cared for. We will update you as we know her better Abby will
be going to meet Dr. Matt this week and be spayed.
