9/27/03 Rebel has been adopted!
9/14/03 Rebel went to the vet yesterday as he needed to be heartworm tested and put on
preventative. His test was negative and is now weighing in at 67 pounds. He has gained
some much needed weight and looks so much better. He was also great with the girls at the
vet and they got a big charge out of how he lays down sometimes with his back lets straight
out so that he looks like a frog. Everyone had to come and look at him and he got lots of
attention which he loves. He loves to ride in a car and then we visited my Mom and he was
so good and behaved like a gentleman. He has really settled in at his foster home and it has
been fun watching him become more relaxed and enjoying his life right now. He loves toys
and has a great time with them. He also has found a friend with our deaf white girl, Snowie.
They play until they just tire themselves out. He is really a pretty calm dog but he does have
these little bursts of energy where he will run and jump and just want to play. Then there are
other times when he will just come over to you and want to be loved. He is really a great
guy. We are working on his leash manners and he is getting better. He thinks as soon as he
has a leash on it means time to play tug of war. We have been immediately stepping on his
leash so that he will stop and it is working. Rebel has met a few children and has been fine
with them. I think Rebel is going to do great in his forever home. He certainly has come
along ways and can't wait til he finds his new forever home.
9/5/03 Rebel continues to do well at his foster home. He is looking so much better with
gaining a little bit of weight already. He has gotten very playful and loves toys. He will run
with them, throw them, shake them and retrieve them. It is quite funny to watch. Rebel is a
great eater and has no issues with his food bowl. He has begun to play with his foster dad
and is learning exactly how to play nice. I'm not sure if he ever played to much in his past
but we are working with him. Rebel has made great progress on going in his crate. We
always give him a filled marrow bone with peanut butter and he will now race you to the
crate and be turned around waiting for his special treat. We are not seeing him so stressed
in a crate any longer. He will also go in for just a dog treat but his favorite is the marrow
bone. He continues to do well with his foster brothers and sister and they have quite a few
play sessions during the day. It is great to see him have fun and be so happy. The only real
problem that we are having is that he has no problem jumping the fence. He only does this
when his foster dad has left the yard and once out, he goes immediatly to his foster dad.
So, his foster dad will let him run in the fenced area but when I am with him, he goes on a tie
out run. He doesn't really mind this at all and I believe that this is what he is use to from his
past. He really entertains himself while tied out by playing tug of war with the tie out. He
really has a great time out there. Rebel did meet our teenage son this week and without a
doubt he loved him instantly and wanted him all to himself. I believe that he lived with
children in his past home. I think Rebel is going to make a great pet to some lucky family. I
believe that he will become very devoted to anyone that shows him some kindness and love.
We are really pleased with his progress and feel he will make a great companion and friend.
8/24/03 Rebel continues to do well at his foster home. He spends his days with his foster
brothers and sister and gets more comfortable everyday. He is doing great in his crate
during the day with no issues. He has already learned when he has to go in his crate and he
will be there waiting for his peanut butter filled marrow bone. Sure didn't take him long to
figure that out. He is a great eater and is still very motivated about food. He finishes his
bowl first and he has actually gained some weight. Rebel is looking much better. He likes
dog bones and takes them very nicely. He is working on being patiient for his turn. He
knows a few commands like come, sit and I think that you could get him to do anything
once he knew what you wanted. Rebel loves attention and likes to snuggle on the couch or
floor. He slept in our bedroom last night for the first time and slept on a dog bed. We are
very happy with the way Rebel is fitting in here at his foster home. We need to get him in to
the vets to get heartworm tested and on preventative this week. The only real problem is
that Rebel has no problem clearing a 5 ft fence and will jump over the fence to find out
where his foster dad is. He is very good and will come when called. It also gave him a
chance to meet two neighbors and he did fine with it. So now he must be tied out on a run if
his foster dad is not within his sight. We think Rebel is going to be a great companion. He
will be very dedicated to his new family.
8/17/03 We have made great progress today with Rebel. He has met all his foster brothers
and sister this afternoon and he is doing well with it. Everyone still has leashes on but we
are really encouraged by his great attitude today. All I can say is that he has had a great
day. I believe that he spent most of his time on a tie out run. We have one here and use it
when we have a new foster that isn't ready for lots of boxer socialization yet and he was on
it this morning while we were working in our front lawn. He plays with himself by pulling on
the lead and playing tug of war. He also did this when I was walking him this morning and it
was all I could do to hold on to him. He is very strong and has mastered this game very
well. We will work on discouraging this behavior by putting some ivory soap on the leash to
give him an unpleasant taste. He is just way to strong to do this when you are walking him.
Hopefully, he will not have to deal with being "tied out" any longer. He is very sweet and
will come over to you and put his head on your lap to pet him. He loves the attention and I
believe that he finds it very relaxing. I can almost put him to sleep by doing this. Rebel has
even taken to sleeping on dog beds while in the house. So all is well here at the Boxer'In.
We are so happy that Rebel continues to make such good progress and he is just so
thankful for his second chance at a new loving home
8/16/03 Boxer'In on the Lake would like to introduce our new foster named Rebel. Rebel
is a 3 year old neutered male fawn boxer with natural ears and a docked tail. He is about 60
lbs and is very thin, with four white paws and a white chest. Rebel entered rescue from an
area shelter and he would like to thank all his friends at the shelter who worked so hard to
get him to us. He will always be thankful for your kindness and good care. Rebel was an
owner surrender to the shelter who said that he was fighting with the other uneutered male
dogs in the house. He was recently neutered by the shelter and he is feeling much better
about himself. He was great on the ride home and fell asleep as soon as we hit the highway.
He has not met his foster brothers and sister yet and we will take it slow with him until he
feels comfortable here. Rebel has some battle wounds and is just getting over kennel cough.
He has been so sweet with us and we are really feeling good about Rebel. He is eating 2
meals a day of kibbled mixed with some water and a little bit of can. He is a great eater and
I expect him to gain some much needed weight as he settles in at his foster home. The girls
at the shelter said he was very motivated by food and they were sure right on that. He is
really doing well with his crate and will go right in for some treats. We are making him work
for his treats and he responds real well to positive reinforcement. Rebel is up to date on his
vaccinations but will have to be heartworm tested and have a kennel cough vaccination. We
will put him on heartworm preventative as soon as we get a negative result. He has had no
accidents in the house and loves having some blankets in his crate to sleep on. He has been
enjoying our fenced in backyard and will do a little bit of running and is starting to have
some fun. He has played with a ball in the house and I really expect him to start fitting in a
little bit more each day. He is very sweet but nervous today and that is to be expected. We
are really looking forward to seeing Rebel enjoy a dogs life. He is deserving of his second
chance so make sure you check back on this guy. He's a sweetie.
