UPDATED 10-16-04 - It's has been just over one year since we started the process
to adopt a boxer.  We have been blessed with Lady.  She has been such a joy in our
home and lives, a little over weight (the vet says we feed her to well- but she is very
healthy) she has become a major part of the family.

Her communication skills are unbelievable, and she even tries to talk with us.  She
wakes each morning with Paul, goes out, has breakfast with him and the comes to
wake me up.  She comes upstairs while I shower and dress and then goes downstairs
and settles in on the couch where she can watch the world go by.  When I come home
for lunch she will have a drink of water and then tells me if she needs to go out-  this is
more likely to happen if she knows the other boxers in the neighborhood are out or if
she happened to see the cat come across the street. When it's time for me to get back
to the office she will either gladly come in, or begrudgingly leave her "friends" and
come in after a second call-  (who has who trained)

The evening is great when I get home, it's like she hasn't seen me in weeks-  she will
tell us if she wants to eat earlier then we do- but no matter if it's a meal or a treat she
has this great habit of sitting in the dining room and looks into the kitchen, she will stay
there until we tell her it is OK to come and eat.  After the dishes are done she gets
very playful- she has special toys she will use with each of us and depending on what
either of us are doing she will bring the toy for who she wants to play with. Sometimes
she will think she should have an extra treat, she gets this little stance, cocks her head a
little and begging to talk.  If I don't pay attention to her she will snort a little, stomp her
foot and start talking all over again- when I ask her what she wants she will either sit in
the dining room or go to the back door- again who has who trained-  if she gets to
excessive all I have to do is the down command and she will lay right next to the couch
and look over her shoulder to be sure she will get her praise.

When she's done she will lay down next to Paul and wait for him to go to bed.  After
he goes up stairs she may sit on the couch for a while, or play a little more, but when
she goes upstairs she goes to the foyer, looks back until she has permission and the
goes off to bed.

With my new job I travel at least once a month, while I'm gone, she does many of the
same rituals, but if she thinks I've been to long she sits looking out the window and
waiting by the door in the foyer.

She is becoming quit the traveler herself, we spent a week up at Black Lake in
September which she loved. the cottage, playing in the water and chasing ducks, she
was so good.  Her next trip is going to Buffalo with us next weekend as Paul's niece is
getting married and then off to NYC for Thanksgiving.

My future son-in-law has named her the five min Boxer, when he and my daughter
come home to visit Lady has a ritual of greeting them that runs about five minutes, but
she then calms down sits with them or gets a toy to play with them.

Since I work in the world of HIV and STD testing and education and running support
groups I can experience some dark days at work, but when I get home Lady is so
great at sensing my mood and can bring a smile to my face faster than anything.

I can't sing the praises of Second Chance enough, I sense that Lady really understands
what has happened to her and she seems so happy with her home.  But reality we are
the lucky ones to have the honor of providing a home for Lady.

UPDATED 1/18/04 - Lady has settled in very well and seems like she has always
been a part of the family. She still is coming up with new behaviors that are so exciting
and is a great communicator.  For example when she is outside she will play, do her
business and check things out, but when it's time to come in the house she gets this
stance, pauses and then runs like the wind for the back door, it is great as there is no
question to what she has in mind.  She also had started "talking" to me, it usually
happens in the evening after she had had her dinner and we have eaten, she will come
to me, yawn and then make these sounds looking me in the eye as to say, "you don't
understand me do you!, then she gently places her paw on my hand or knee and looks
to the kitchen, if I don't respond as she thinks I should she will "talk" again.  Once in
the kitchen I will ask if she wants to go out, if she does she goes to the back door, if
that's not it I'll ask if she wants a biscut and she will look to her "cookie" jar, or the box
of milk bones or the pantry where the beggin strips are kept to let me know what she
would like. The it's back to the living room to play.  We have given here toys but our
family and friends have spoiled her with gifts- she like to keep them under the coffee
table and will get what ever one she wants to play with and we play.  There are a few
she has decided are to be played with Paul with and a few that seem to be mine. She
still gets excited when we have company too. Megan my daughter come often, well the
other evening I heard Megan's car and told Lady Megan was here, she went to the
foyer and sat and waited for Meg, then once she was in and taking her boots off Lady
ran to the dining room and back to the foyer, well there is a small throw rug as you
enter the living room and Lady slipped on it, well she looked at us with a big grin on
her face and did it two more times waiting for Megan to get in the Living room. Today
Paul and I attend our first Obedience training class, and Lady starts with us next week,
I hope this will help with her agression with other dogs as I want to have her travel with
us and our friends that have dogs. She is such a joy, and hopefully now that she is
feeling secure in her forever home will can at least help her be polite in the company of
others.

UPDATED 12/21/03 - It's hard to beleive that Lady will have been here a month
tomorrow.  It seems like she has always been a part of the family, and had fit in so
well.  She went to the office with me on Friday to greet the staff I work with.  When I
got her leash she went to the front door and sat waiting for me to be ready, we walked
out to the car and I opened the passenger door and she gently climbed in, sat waiting
for her seat belt and just looked all around.  As we drove to my office she laid her
head on my sholder and looked up with those BIG brown eyes.  When we got to the
office she was so excited to meet and greet everyone that she could.  She was
fantastic.  We had a week long holiday gift exchange all week at the office called
secret snowflake and Lady got a lot of nice gifts- treets, picture frames for all the
photos we take of her.  Needless to say she was the hit of the office. Her
communication skills are great, she has us trained well, she has a certain sound for
when she needs to go out, a different sound she makes when the neighbor dogs are out
and she wants to greet them through the fence, and when she knows someone she had
meet is here she goes to the foyer and tried to sit so paitently waiting for them to get on
the porch.  It is still so cute how she will great my daughter when she come over, and
the boyfriend is home for the holidays and Lady has given her approval of him. She got
so excited when she met him. She loves to play, and has special times that she wants
to play, early evening after dinner is her favorite time, and I still find it exciting the way
she will include both Paul and myself in the actvities.  What is interesting is when her
ball or any toy goes under the Christmas Tree she is so gentle as she tries to get it from
under the tree, she very carefully uses her paw and bats at the toy untill she pulls it
back enough to pick it us, teh she does a little sucess lap around the coffee table. He
manners are great, she never begs during meal time, just sits between us hoping
something will drop, and ends up napping at my feet.  If there is a treat she is usually
served in the kitchen at her dish.  Just as a quick aside, the raised feeding dishes at the
greatest, not only for Lady, but for keeping the kitchen clean as well- we have sold a
couple of frinds on them already!! It will be the greatest of holiday seasons with our
"new" litle girl- the joy that she has give us is so much greater than I ever expected.
Happy Holidays to all!!

UPDATED 12/8/03 - It's been over two weeks already and Lady is so at home.  Her
training shines through with all she does.  She loves to sit and shake hands She is
getting use to sounds in the city, and is very aware when the neighborhood dogs go for
their walks.  It's fun when my daughter Megan comes to visit Lady knows her car, she
gently looks out the window, pushes the curtain away and then waits until Megan
reaches the poarch, then to the front door and sits waiting for the door to open, it's
then a few moments of gental excitment, a kiss or two and then back to what ever she
was doing. She is so very social with our guests, but then she will sit and wait to be
talked to. What a difference it is to have such a great house guest to come home to-
Lady has the run of the house while Paul and I work, and is always happy to see us.
Life doesn't get much better than this!!

11/22/03 Lotus has been adopted.

Lady Lotus has had another great week at her foster home.  She is now playing with
alot of different toys and loves kongs, balls  and stuffed animals.  She has really gotten
very playful.  Yesterday her and I raked up a large part of our yard together and she
had a ball.  I had brought out the holey ball and she loved it and was burying it in the
pile of leaves then she would find it.  She was one tired girl last night.  She continues to
be dominant on a leash with other dogs.  We tried again today outside and she
immediately jumps on the back of another dog and wants to make sure that they know
she is the boss.  Lotus will need to be an only dog for sure.  It is really strange because
she can be divided from the other dogs just by a baby gate and there are no problems.
Lotus and another dog can meet face to face by jumping on top of the gate and they
give kisses to each other plus her tail wags and she really gives you the idea that she is
getting over it. We have been walking her out of the yard and then pretend like we are
walking by with another one of our dogs and she really isn't too bad at that point.  It is
just when they become too close for comfort.  You can still control her and walk past
but they just can't meet.  She continues to be a sweetheart with people and loves to be
with either of us.  She meets people really well and is so happy to get the attention.
Everyone thinks she is very sweet.  She is so well behaved beside the dog issue.  She
stays in her private suite separated from her foster brothers and sister just by a baby
gate.  We have been socializing her by just gating her off from the other dogs and it is
working well.  The biggest problem we are having is that her foster brothers and sister
know when we are trying to move her around and aren't as cooperative has we would
like.  It is kind of like sheep herding.  All in all, she is just a great dog.  Very very
devoted to us and will be a great addition to any family with no other dogs.  She is so
loving and we are hoping that she will find her forever home soon.

10/22/03 I wanted to tell you that Lady Lotus has been to the vet and does have an
upper respiratory infection.  She has been given some antibiotic and already we have
seen an improvement in her.  The poor girl was sneezing all the time.  She also was
heartworm tested and that came back negative.  We also checked a stool sample and
she does have hookworms and has been given her first dose of medication.  She
should feel like a new "Lady" in no time.  She is a great rider in the car and loved being
at the vets office.  All the girls made a big deal about her and she was full of wiggles
and kisses.  She was really cute while we were there.  They just couldn't get over how
much she loved people.  She didn't want to leave the office.  She did see another dog
that was coming into the waiting room and her foster dad had to take her out of the
office.  She just doesn't want to be friends with another dog.  I really believe that she is
jealous of attention shown to other dogs.  We have seen a big improvement to how
she acts at the gate when all her foster brothers and sisters are there.  She wiggles her
tail and has no problems except when one of us comes over to the gate.  I believe that
she just hasn't been socialized with other dogs and has never learned that they can be
her friends.  She sure knows how to love people that's for sure.  She continues to be a
well behaved girl and has so much fun with her foster parents. She plays, and talks and
looks forward to playtime.  She is just a great dog.  She hasn't been crated at all this
week and stays in her private suite (spare bedroom)and she keeps her suite spotless.
She really has no others issues at all.  I think she is going to make some family very
lucky as long as there are no other dogs.  She really is excited about the thought of her
new family.  She can hardly wait.

10/19/03 Lotus who is answering to Lady now is doing just fine at her foster home.
She is a love and has really been just great.  She has done very well to adjust to her
new foster home.  She still just doesn't care for other dogs but does well in her crate
with all of them around her.  We have been doing alot of moving of dogs and it is not
always easy to get 6 dogs to move to one area so that we can move her but it is
working with some extra effort.  We have given her the spare bedroom which she likes
very much.  We try to keep her with one of us most of the time because she is liking
the attention and is very deserving of some extra love.  She will cry when she can't get
to one of us.  During the work day she is crated with all of the other dogs and does
well with that.  Lady will be gong to the vet this week to bring her up to date on her
vaccinations, heartworm tested and she also has some sneezing and is a little
congested.  She likes to play with toys and of course her favorite are balls and
squeeky toys.  She plays very nice and gives lots of kisses.  Lady is a very calm boxer
and would be a great addition to a home that has no other dogs.  I don't know how
she would be with a cat.  She is a real people dog and is just nice to have around.  She
has a really nice personality who just loves people and children.  She is completely
housebroken and very patient and loving.  This girl definately deserves to be given her
second chance at a great life.  I really believe that her dislike for other dogs comes
from being jealous.  She will let anyone of our dogs come up to the gate with her on
the other side with no problems, but if I am at the gate she isn't happy with them being
there.  She has so many other good traits and I believe that if she was an only dog, she
would dedicate her life to her new family.  She is just a great girl.  Calm boxers like this
girl don't come around very often.  She is just a sweetheart.

10/14/03 Lotus has arrived at the Boxer'In on the lake foster home.  She has been in
foster care a short time but needs a little extra help with some of her manners so we
are going to try and help her.  Lotus would like to thank Jill and her daughter Alex for
meeting me to pick her up.  Lotus also wanted me to thank her previous foster mom
who was wonderful to her.  This girl is sweet.  She gives kisses, knows a few
commands, and likes to play.  She is great in her crate and doesn't make a peep in
there.  She is a very very calm girl.  I just love her. She likes toys and will play really
nice with you.  She is eating kibbled with a spoon of canned and a little water.  She is a
good eater and has adjusted very well to life at the Inn.  I took her down to the water
to see what she thought and she looked at it funny then proceeded to walk in.  It is
getting a little chilly now too so she didn't stay in too long. Lotus  has not been
answering to her name so we have been calling her Lady and she really seems to be
responding to it.  She loves her foster dad already and plays very nice with him.  It
doesn't take much to get her going either.  So you are asking yourself why hasn't this
great dog been adopted yet.  Well, she is not fond of dogs yet and I say yet because
we are to see if we can get her over it.  You see, we have 5 resident boxers here at the
inn and another visiting previous foster girl staying for a few weeks so we have lots and
lots to practice on.  We have been giving her space but tonight we will move her crate
to a more general area and see if she wants to get over this.  She is a wonderful girl
and I am hoping that we can at least get her to meet them outside on a walk and be
able to just walk by without jumping on them.  I tried with one of the resident dogs
Mickey who is very nice and she didn't like him at all.   She doesn't even give a sniff,
she just doesn't like the looks of him. So, we are going to give it our best try possible.
She will make a great pet and companion so it will be worth the effort.  She certainly
does love people and children.  Check back and see her progress.  She will needs lots
of love and patience so think about filling out an application to start the process for
adopting her.

10/3/03-Hi Lotus here, and I need to tell you a little about myself. I am a two year old
payed female who found herself in the local shelter. I'm not too polite when it comes to
sharing my house with other animals, but if you are a one-dog person, I'm your girl!
I like to play and give lots of boxer kisses. I'm tired of moving from place to place , so
if you're interested, put in an application right away!
