9/11/03 Forrest is pending adoption!

9/8/03 Hi everyone, look how big I've grown! Can you believe it? My fostermom says that as
long as my new family makes sure I that my legs are taken care of, I am leashed walked
regularly, and hopefully get to see my own orthopedist (for my follow-up visits) I am ready to
go to my forever home!
A new guy arrived here yesterday. He smaller than me, which is very cool. I like him, but I
want to chew on his head for being as cute as me.He doesnt seem to mind playing chewy face.
We have fun though, and he liked to sleep up next to me, which is nice.. I guess he is all right.

9/3/03 Forrest had his sutures removed yesterday and the vet said everything looks fine. He
has taken "Gumpie" off rimadyl and put him on a different medication for pain and stiffness
while he is healing, and gave me a few exercises to do with him for physical therapy. The
motion in both legs is correct and the vet was pleased at how things are progressing. He said
there are many things going on inside those little legs that cause pain and stiffness,  though they
are healing fine. He said he had to fracture each leg in two places and then move everything
into the proper place and reattach everything with metal pins and nylon. Amazing! I guess it's
not so surprising that they ache and are still sore after only a couple weeks, especially since he
has to walk on them!
Gump's  in really good spirits though, and has been growing (up to 41 lbs!). He is pretty good
about staying off his feet, probably because he has never been able to run and play without
some pain. He really wants to play though...I will be so happy for him when he can!

8/22/03 Hi everyone! It's me, Forrest! I'm feeling pretty perky today. Here I am, aren't I a
handsome little guy?
This is my big friend Nessie, she is very gentle with me because she knows I am little, and that
my legs are sore. I just love to play with her! If I could meet all the people who sent in
donations for me, I would give each one a big smoochy kiss. My legs may be sore, but they
are nice and straight!   I will be so proud when I can walk and play like the big dogs here!

8/21/03 Forrest had a pretty good night and ate a big breakfast this morning. His legs are still
quite painful so he's not trying to get around too much yet. He is on rimadyl once a day, and
antibiotics to prevent infection. The incisions look nice and clean, and so far he isn't trying to
chew on the sutures.
I asked how the surgery went at our appointment yesterday, and was told Forrest had a fairly
severe case of patellar luxation. The tendons had started to wear a groove on the outside of his
leg/knee (they are supposed to ride in a natural groove on the front), and they thought that was
probably very painful for him. No wonder he stopped and sat down all the time and couldn't
play. He tried so hard to run and play anyway! What a brave little guy. I am so glad we could
do this for him, he is going to be one happy puppy when he is healed!!

8/20/03 Forrest had his very successful surgery  (and also castration) on Monday, and came
home this afternoon. It all went very well and his legs are already upright and working with  the
correct motion! He must stay very quiet and not run or jump for several weeks while they heal.
I was very surprised that there were no casts or bandages, but was told that adhesions would
form if it was immobilized, and that it would keep the knee from moving correctly. The swelling
has gone down a lot already, but it's still swollen and sore, poor little guy. He is SO happy to
be be home though, and kissing us non-stop!

8/7/03 Forrest had his consultation on Monday and it was good news! He does not have hip
dysplasia, but he does need surgery on both back knees for patellar luxation. The groove down
the center of the bone of each knee isnt deep enough for the tendon to stay in, plus the tendon
is attached to one side instead of center. The tendon that is supposed to go over the front of his
knee is running along the side of his leg! He is to have surgery next Monday on both knees

It's important that everyone realize that Forrest is otherwise a healthy and happy little guy and a
typical boxer puppy! Donations made on his behalf will not be made in vain, and his surgery is
expected to be successful. Please help us help him to have a full and hapy life!

8/1/03 This charming little guy arrived at the Last Resort yesterday. He was surrendered from
a small pet store because he appears to have hip dysplasia. His hind end is definitely weak, but
we have a consultation with the orthopedist on Monday to confirm the diagnosis, and to find
out if we can help this little guy along so he can have a healthy normal life. Other than that he is
healthy and happy!
Forrest is a typical boxer puppy... energetic, feisty and playful, loves toys and the other dogs,
and will eat anything in sight! I had trouble getting good photos, he doesnt hold still long enough!

Forrest is a pretty fawn boy with docked tail and natural ears. He is used to being
caged/crated, and I will get him on a regular bathroon schedule so his housebreaking wilo be
underway as it should be at his age. He is doing well in that area, as long as I watch for his
"bathroom" signs, and also get him out after meals and naps.
Keep watching for more pics and updates while we get this adorable puppy evaluated!
