UPDATE 4/2/0/08 - I am sad to report that Dempsey had an "episode" last night that he did not recover from. He was playing with my 2 year old daughter and collapsed. He took three deep breaths and on the on the last one we felt his heart stop. We rushed him to the emergency room but it was to late, there was nothing they could do. They tried to reassure us that if his heart disease had progressed this much there was nothing else that we could have done and that his death was painless. He had started Vetmedin after his ultrasound last week.
My daughter is truly devasted and keeps asking why we had to leave Dempsey and wants to know where he is. We are trying to explain to her that he is now in a place where he is no longer sick and he can see Bastien but that we wont be able to see him anymore. I wish I could make her understand.
After we adopted him from Second Chance he never fully recovered from what he had been through but we could never have asked for a better boy with our kids and an overall great dog that was just always so eager to please. We can only hope that we gave him a great home and that he was truly happy living here with us. My only saviour is that I did not have to make any hard decisions for him, his body told him it was time and he died doing what he loved and in my husbands arms. He is now reunited with our boy Bastien who passed less then a year ago from his long fight with lymphoma. I know they will be excited to see each other.

UPDATE 8/28/05 - Hi everyone, Dempsey here. I thought I would send a quick update since my mom hasn't told you what has been going on around here. Mom and Dad have taken me and my brother Bastien on all the family trips this Spring and Summer and boy were they fun. We have gone to Maine a couple times where we rented this house right on a private beach so me and Bastien can run and play off our leashes. The water was a little to cold for me to swim in but I sure did like splashing around! We also went camping. Mom bought a really big tent so there would be enough room for all of us. We went with a lot of people which took me a little time to get used to but I warmed right up when someone offered me some steak for dinner!! Our site was right next to the beach/lake too so my brother and I got to do a lot of playing. We also went away with another couple for a weekend who had a baby Chocolate Lab, Riggly. He was only 5 months old and I was in heaven! He bit my jowels a lot but I had so much fun playing with him I was a little mad when mom told me he wasn't coming home with us. Mom has also been telling me that I am going to be a big brother soon. I thought we were getting another dog but it seems that I am going to have a human little brother or sister. I don't really know what to expect but mom is telling me it will be a lot of fun. She is also trying to prepare us with some silly doll. She makes me laugh!
I just wanted to let everyone know how much fun I am still having here at my home and share some of the exciting new things mommy and daddy introduce me to. They keep telling me what I good boy I am but I just need to learn to be a little gentler when I play, and I am working very hard on this because I am so eager to please. I still love my big brother Bastien but we are brothers and there are some times that one of us just needs a little time alone and mommy says that is OK. I am also working on getting used to visitors and learning to trust strangers. I think I am getting better with this but hey - no one is perfect!
Well, my brother is sitting here waiting for me to play with him in the backyard. Its not to hot today, perfect weather for rough-housing. Thanks for listening!!

UPDATE 3/28/05 - Hi everyone, first let me say that I sent am email out a few days ago
>about my two boys being covered in sap. Thank you to all that responded
>and believe it or not, mayo did the trick.....
>I also wanted to send an update on our Dempsey. Partly because I am so
>proud of the way he acted this weekend. We adopted Dempsey in January of
>04. He had a rough start and was/is very untrusting of everyone except my
>husband and me. He barks, growls and pees at the sight of people. Then he
>will take cover in his crate or completely out of sight upstairs in our
>bedroom. He continues to get better with this issue though. This weekend
>we had people over for Easter brunch. There were 12 other people besides
>me and my husband! Dempsey started out in his crate in the living room
>until everyone arrived and got settled, then I let him out. To my amaze,
>he cautiously came out of his crate and started sniffing people. No
>barking, growling or peeing. He stayed in the same room as everyone but
>continued to be very alert watching everyones every move. I was a little
>nervous about my grandfather as he is spooked by dogs, especially when
>they seem to be acting agressively as Dempsey usually does.
>  Plus, he is a little unsteady on his feet. But Dempsey seemed to really
> take to him and decided to sit on the couch with him! Dempsey then joined
> us for Easter brunch by nicely sitting underneath the dining room table
> and not making a peep. He made a friend too because before I knew it
> Dempseys head was laid upon my grandfathers lap as my grandfather grinned
> thinking he was sneeking Dempsey some people food, lol. All in all it was
> a wonderful day and I am very proud of how far our Dempsey has come.
>About a month ago someone wrote of a dog they had adopted from SCBR that
>has the same mannerisms as Dempsey. I hope that they are doing better but
>I also want them to know that even though it seems that the dog will never
>be able to adapt with a lot of love and gradual socialization they can
>turn into that perfect family pet!
>
>Thanks for listening! Hope everyone had a great Easter.

UPDATED 12/12/04 - As I sit here and right this I can not believe almost one year has passed since we adopted Dempsey! Since I haven't written in a while I just thought I would give a quick update on how he was doing. We really could not have asked for a better addition to our family. Dempsey has progressed so much since we got him a year ago that it is truly amazing. He still has a ways to go but we can see the improvement in him increasing day by day. He loves to play but is still learning that playing with humans can't be as rough as playing with his Boxer brother. Dempsey and his brother get along so well and just love each other. We had my sister over for the weekend and Bastien decided to sleep with her one night. The next morning when Dempsey saw him, you would think that he had been gone for years. Dempsey ran up to Bastien and started giving him kisses on his face. Then rested his head upon Bastiens back as to say, thank goodness you are back, where have you been! It was the cutest thing! Unfortunately, Bastien is going in for surgery in the morning so Dempsey will have to learn to cope without playing with his brother for a while so there is definitely going to have to be an adjustment period.
In short, my husband and I just love Dempsey so much and are so grateful to have him in our lives. Second Chance is such a great organization and does such wonderful things for these dogs that I am proud to be associated with them and able to help!

UPDATED 5/10/04 - Hi everyone, I just thought I would give you a quick update on Dempsey. We adpoted him back in January and we couldn't have asked for a better addition to our family. Even though he had a rough start he has so much love to give. He has his last day of training tonight and he is going to pass with flying colors. The trainer keeps saying what a great dog Dempsey is and she can't beleive how good he is (funny that the "kids" are always on their best behavior when they are visting). He prances around the training room like he has just won first prize for best in show. It is the funniest thing. He is just so proud. I also now know why boxers don't have tails! Dempsey still has his and it is constantly wagging. It can be deadly!
He and our other Boxer get along wonderfully. The play until they both collapse from exhaustion only to take a quick nap and start all over again!
I know Dempsey's foster mom, Gizelle, as well as Leann like to keep updated as to how these guys are doing so just wanted to let them, and everyone else know how happy we are to have Dempsey with us. It has only been 5 months and he has come so far and is truely a treasured part of our family.

UPDATED 2/23/04 - Hello Everyone, Demspey here. I am sitting cuddled next to my mommy on the couch while she was on the computer so I asked if I could write my update. I am having so much fun here in my new home. My mommy and daddy love me so much! I have so much fun playing with my brother all day long. We have so many toys to play tug of war with. My mommy gives my brother and me these things called bones. They taste so yummy but sometimes they are hard for me to chew so my mommy will soak them for me. She tells me not to worry though because someday my teeth and jaw will be strong enough that I will be able to chew them all by myself.
This past weekend my mommmy and daddy took Bastien and I on some errands becuase Bastien likes to get out of the house a bit. I was on my best behavior in the car and such a good traveling companion. It paid off too since we got to stop at the pet store where I got to pick out some new bones and cookies. Mom got me some breath mints too because she said I have stinky breath. I was a good boy at the store. I didn't bark or growl at anyone and wasn't scared a bit. My big brother Bastien had boxer wiggles for everyone at the store so I knew it was OK.
I still don't like it when people come over though. I bark and bark and growl and growl. I must look scary too because sometimes people leave or are scared to come in because of me. Mommy and Daddy try to tell them I am just a big baby but for some reason they just can't see it. Mommy tells me it is OK though. She thinks I will learn not to be scared and bark at people.
Well, I am kind of sleepy after typing all of this so I am going to go snuggle with my mommy, daddy, and brother in bed. I sure am happy here and want to thank SCBR and Giselle for taking such good care of me while I was with them and helping me find my forever home!

UPDATED - 1/4/04 Dempsey has been adopted!

12/21/03
I have gotten to know Depsey so much more this week and I can say that he is the sweetest, docile little Angel ever!
For a dog that has been through as much as he has in his first year of life and still have the beautiful boxer personality, it's still hard for me to believe sometimes. He has been tested in many situations in my home( I do have 4 dogs of my own) and he has come out with flying colors. He is very gentle with my two daughters, he ever so delicately takes a treat.
Dempsey thrives with other dogs or dog around. He has lived a lonely existence up until now and we want to fill his life with another dog companion.
Dempsey is still a puppy and he has lots of energy to burn. If you have a backyard that he can run in and another dog that needs a brother, fill out an application and see what happens.
Dempsey arrived yesterday thanks to his owner. He is a beautiful red color with natural ears and a tail. He has white sox on his feet and a little white down the back of his neck and chest. His face is so cute and sqiushy. He is on the smaller side for a male but it suits him just fine. He loves the dogs in the house and also lived with two cats. He is a very gentle pup and I'm looking forward to getting to know him better this week.
