9/28/03 - UPDATED - Chika is doing well on her first day with my family. She is clingy
as to be expected but very well behaved. She listens very intently and she wants to be
petted. constantly. Chika and my Shar-Pei Sha-Nae-Nae are getting along well. They
are in the bonding phase as they are learning how to share the yard and play together. So
far, so good. There is no sign of food or toy agression. Sha-Nae-Nae never played with
toys anyway. She watches Chika as she plays and she is content with observing her. Of
course that can change so I will supervise them as Chika plays around the house. Chika
has met my wife and newborn and she is taken to my wife and listens to her commands.
So my wife is very relieved. I want to thank all you at SCBR especially The T Family for
preparing Chika for my home and showing me around the farm. I had a great visit with a
wonderful family. And to think they are from Brooklyn. Go Figure? I included a picture
of Chika, Sha-Nae-nae and myself. With people like the T's a part of the SCBR
organization I know that SCBR will remain a top notch organization. I also want to thank
Julie, Nicole and Leann for being very professional and caring people and allowing me to
become a part of the SCBR family.
9/27/03 Chika had been adopted.
8/25 Chika Marie is doing great, she is learning all kinds of stuff, that she didn’t have
an opportunity for when doing her stint in “doggie stir (jail). She watches the other
dogs and takes her cues from them, I love how the boys are always teaching the “new
kids the ropes!! She has had the opportunity to run around the farm “off lead
and get her energy out and has met horses, goats and cats with no issues. I think all that
time in the vet’s, surrounded by cats, has desensitized her, as she will run right past one
and not even seem to see it!! She comes when called (sometimes you have to call twice, if
she’s racing Toby). She still is a picky eater, doesn’t like to eat in the crate, and
sometimes needs for “mom to hold the bowl and remind her she’s eating, to
get the job done. She is such a sweety, some one will scoop her up very soon I am sure.
8/21 We have added a little to Chika’s name!! For some reason for the last several
days, every time I call her I say “Chika Marie and she really seems to love it. She
has been having such a good time tiring out the other three boxers. Her special favorite is
Macho, who has a breathing deficit, and believe it or not I think all the wrestling with Chika
Marie is improving his stamina a bit, less wheezing!! She also cannot get enough of the toy
basket and spreads her “joy all over the house. She seems to have gotten over her
fear of Bill and has become his personal “snuggle boxer. This doesn’t mean she
will automatically trust all men, but is a very good sign that with time she will forget why she
was afraid of them in the first place.
8/17 I just realized while reviewing Chika’s other updates, that I never told you about
her ears!! They are cropped very close so you would think they would stand up pretty
well, but….. They don’t!! They both tip over at the top, the right one more than the
left, and it gives her a very “happy go lucky expression. Or it could be a “little
devil expression, depends on what she’s up to at the time!! Right now we have a
boxer “napping chain in the living room, Chika is asleep on her side, her foster
brother is using her flank as a pillow, a second brother is laying with his front paws
intertwined with the first’s back ones and the last one is curled in a ball with his head
on the third’s rump!! And I know if I move to get the camera, it will be all gone in 2
seconds flat. Should run around with that thing on my neck!!
8/14 Miss Chika has been having some “reverse dominance training here. Instead
of having to work for her treats or privileges, she is temporarily getting them for free. IT
took us 3 days to get her to come up on the bed (even front paws, only) and she is so
submissive we are trying this approach to “boost her self esteem a little. She has no
problem with the dog pack, but the “human pack is really hard for her to figure out.
We are hoping with a little encouragement and “spoiling she will be less fearful and
submissive. We did discover that she has an “over the top reaction to men in
baseball caps. She went balistic when my husband came in wearing one today! He had to
take it off and then approach her backward so she could smell his hand. She was very
appologetic when she realized it was him, but there had to be something very “bad
in her poor little memory, for a cap to set her off so badly.
8/12 Chika has settled in nicely, getting alone with all the other doggies just fine. She is a
good girl, with a wonderful attitude. She does love to play and it’s a good thing there
are so many other dogs here that she can wear them out one at a time (or in a bunch, sheâ
€™s not picky). Chika does have a little problem with men, she is scared of them, big
time. Whenever my hubby comes home she barks, hackles and runs. Then when he calls
her to him she crawl/wiggles over, peeing all the way. He has to be here for a few minutes
before she remembers, “oh, yeah, he’s a nice guy! then she is all kisses and
snuggles for him too! She is a very picky eater. She wants nothing and I mean nothing on
her kibble, no water (hot or cold) no “extras of any kind, or she won’t touch it.
8/10 Well little Chika is one happy little boxer! She lovers to give kisses and her kidney
bean dance is to die laughing at, she literally folds herself in half. I was talking to the vet
techs who took care of her today and they said that she jumps into your arms on
command, and has learned pole bending and other agility tricks while staying with them.
She is a little cuddle bug too. She was very thin when she came in and she had bad worm
problems and severe diarrhea so she was put on a Prescription diet which she has thrived
on, putting on weight and a healthy shinning coat. We will be attempting to wean her off the
CD and onto Nutro. Hopefully her dietary problems have had plenty of time to heal and
she will do well. We’ll keep you posted.
8/9 Chita has arrived in rescue. She comes to us from a vet’s office where she has
been, abandoned, since January, after the vet had to performed emergency surgery for a
septic pregnancy (at 15mths old). All the pups were of course dead, and Chita almost died
as well. She is a sweet, petite, little girl who will be 2 in October. She weighs in at a light
47 lbs, is a dark fawn with some white, is docked and has natural ears. She is very friendly
and has boxer wiggles and kisses for everyone she meets. Everyone in the vets office loves
her and they are all thrilled that she is at last, after the “legal knots have been untied,
on her way to a better life thru SCBR! They spayed her for us virtually within hours of the
turn over (the owners had refused to let them spay her when she was operated on). More
news on this lucky lady to follow!!
