UPDATED 1/9/04 - Hello all at SCBR! I just realized with a jolt that I missed our three month
update, sorry about that!! Chance continues to do so well with us, and we're reaching that
stage of "true love" when he is really and truly part of the family now. He's here with me at the
office now, as a matter of fact, and told me to say "hi" from him. :O) He is in his favorite place
near a heat vent (he's a "heat seeking missile", it's funny), and if you watch him he will
sometimes actually stick his head into the vent to get closer to the warm air. That, and he
adores the woodstove. If he could sleep under it I think he would. Needless to say, he's got a
sweatshirt on today what with it being about 15 below outside. His coat has filled in but I still
wouldn't call him an outdoor dog by any stretch! :) I have a few pics of him with my son, and
my mother in law's cat which are really sweet- I will send them in too. What else can I say?
We love him.
He's doing really well health-wise as well, he's gained about 10lbs since coming home. He was
very muscular but zero fat or slack in his skin when we got him (just nerves on his part, Judy
told me he ate plenty but his anxiety just boiled it all off again), but he's really filled out and
looks gorgeous. Everywhere we go he hears how handsome he is - watch his head swell. :)
Alrighty, time to go pick up my other baby at school. Thank you again for bringing us our fur
baby!
10/7/03 - UPDATED - Chance has been with us for one month now, and boy is he part of the
family!! He is snoozing here next to me on the couch as I write this. :) Simply put, we couldn't
be happier with our "Chancey-boy" (what my son always calls him). He has fit right into our
lives and brought us so much love, laughter and joy. My son adores him and it's mutual! I've
never seen such patience in a dog, letting 4 year old Jamie pal around with him. When my son
is at his dad's, you can tell Chance misses him, too. He and the cat have even worked out a
truce of sorts, so all is well. He is especially happy now that woodstove season has returned -
he is never happier than when sacked out on the carpet in front of a nice warm fire, with all of
us home. :)
Chance loves to play in the yard, and has turned out to be a fetcher! He loves chasing a
Frisbee but has a hard time picking it up, turns out you need teeth to do that better... He goes
with us just about everywhere we go, including my parent's house, where he found a dogtoy
their dog didn't really like, so he adopted it. It is one of those fuzzy gingerbread-shaped chewie
toys, like a teddy bear with no ears or face. He loves this thing, especially the squeaking, and
will chase it and pounce on it like he's hunting and killing it, it is so funny to watch.
We are still dealing with Chance's only trouble, the separation anxiety. Luckily he comes with
us wherever we go 90% of the time, which he loves, but there are just some times he has to be
crated and he hates it still. Poor guy. We are getting together with a behavioral consultant in the
next two weeks to find out what more we can do to help him learn to trust and stay a little
calmer and happier when we go. Other than this, I have to say he is one of the best dogs I have
ever had. He is no trouble in the house, doesn't get into the trash or counter-surf, listens very
well, the whole nine yards. He is starting obedience class next week, and I'm sure will graduate
with honors.
Health-wise he's doing really well. He had a bald area on his neck when we brought him home,
which turned into a full-blown rash, turns out he was allergic to his nylon collar. A little
antibiotics and a nice new leather collar solved that problem. The vet checked him all over a
few weeks ago, and says he's just the best looking Boxer she's seen in a while, and we agree!
We haven't taken him on any long distance trips yet, other than the day we brought him home,
but I'm sure he'd be fine as he is such a good rider in the car.
That's pretty much all the Chance news... he just woke up enough to ask me to say "Hi" to
everyone at SCBR and "Thanks for finding me this awesome forever home! They have a
woodstove and cool big yard!!" :)
9/7/03 Chance has been adopted!
8/24/03 Chance is pending adoption!
7/21/03 Well, I do have a lot to report about Chance. First of all let me say he is one of the
sweetest dogs we have had here. He will steal your heart with his need to be loved. He is a
great little guy who will do anything to be with the people he loves. He has taken to our family
and loves to be with the kids. So much so that he climbed the ladder to my sons bunk bed to
be with him. He chooses to sleep in the kids room at night. We don't crate him at night
because he has had no problems with the other dogs here. To be honest he does have some
problems being in his crate. I don't think it is the crate that bothers him so much as the idea of
being left alone. We are working on this and he is coming along slowly. He is on a medication
for anxiety and it seems to be helping. On the up side he does love to go for rides so taking
him in the car in not a problem. I think as time goes on and he learns that we will always return
he will get better too. Chance just needs someone who has a lot of time, love and patients to
give this little guy. Chance is hoping someone out there will apprecitate all the unconditional
love he has to offer and give it back in return. Maybe you can give Chance his Second
Chance?
7/8/03 Chance is our latest visitor here at the Thunder and Lightening Boxer Retreat. He is a
very sweet 3 year old dark fawn boy with natural ears, a docked tail and really cute face.
Chance is an owner surrender, the families situtation changed and Chance needs a new home.
Chance is very nervous right now as I think he misses his family. As we get to know him over
the next few days I'll be able to tell you more about his personality. Right now I do know that
he is a people dog. He loves to be with you and sit in your lap. He likes the other dogs okay,
but is not really sure how to play with them or if he even wants too. He would really like to be
friends with our cat, but our cat wants no part of that relationship.;O) Our poor cat has seen
to many dogs and wants nothing to do with any of them. Over all Chance is a sweet little guy
who really needs some one to trust and love. If you think that is you get that application in
today.
